Think about the first time you ever listened to good music on a stereo? I would be inclined to think in terms of my first EDM mix…but well, I know the feeling. The best sound waves soothe your ears. It’s what we all want.
How do we determine a desirable sound system.
- Get a stereo with full-dynamic range. Systems with a “full” range will sound much more crisp and detailed than those with restricted ranges. This is one of the very important factors in determining overall quality.
- Note the wattage. The wattage, or power, is the number of decibels it can produce. This is explained by, audio that sounds great at a medium level might degrade at particularly low or high volumes. Low-wattage systems, won’t be the best choice for listening parties or other situations where you want the audio to be nice and loud.
- Note the Total Harmonic Distortion (THD). Check if you can locate the stereo’s THD rating among its technical details. The number describes how near the quality of the audio put out by the speakers will be to its original source.
- Select the right equipment for the audio source. The source of the audio plays a part in how it will sound over your new system. Try to get a correct reading of your system’s potential.
- Consider the price. It is known that a high-end sound system is more expensive than a mediocre one. You should be keen on the idea of spending more for a top-notch-line model, however, you should consider settling on the affordable option, and save the money while still performing to a high standard.
- Size doesn’t matter. Focus on technical capabilities. Size rarely co-relates with the quality, many consumers assume the larger a sound system is, the more impressive it will sound. Bigger doesn’t always mean better!
- Choose good sounds. Trust your ears as the best judge whether or not the sound system is at par. Some audio characteristics, such as the balance between high and low frequencies, are simply a matter of personal preference. Test your stereo with various sources and at different volume levels and make sure you pay attention to any buzzing, static or distortion when listening. Such mistakes are often signs that a sound system isn’t doing the audio justice. You could further play the same source through different sound systems (or the same sound system via multiple sets of speakers) you’ll have a wide basis for comparison.
